I've decided I'm going to build my chook house next now I've nearly finished the greenhouse .  I 'm gonna keep 3 chooks so how big does it need to be and does this sound OK?


Internal dimensions on the House

30" wide by 40" long Roof height min 30"

On the back othat two cantilevered nest boxes 12" by 12" and 15" min height

The total run will be 9' by 4' with the house floor 2' above the ground.

I was thinking of using plywood for the house and covering it in shiplap board on the outside. Is this a bit overengineered will definately stop draughts though?

The house sounds ok CE. You'd be best to seal all joints with caulking or some sort of sealant (pva glue?) to keep out red mites.
You could make it bigger to allow for future expansion also but that's your decision !

The run is barely big enough IMO especially if they won't free range. Could you make it about twice that size ?

They will be able to free range at least some of the time. How much bigger would you go with the run?

If we look like extending the flock they would move down to the allotment these are really pets and the eggs are a bonus

Although the 1sq metre is cited, I would go for multiples where possible. We have about 3sq metres per bird and that can seem crowded. If you can give them 2 each, it's a lot better than 1. Depends how docile they are. Ours are quite competitive.
