Manure Question
« on: February 24, 2009, 21:39 »
Have been offered the chance of some free horse manure.

Comes from an equestrian centre, rather than a commercial farm and I am assured that the pasture has not been treated with any weed suppressants, so risk of aminopyralids (sp.?) should be low. Of course I only have their word for that.

Also told that there is plenty that is a year old or older, so should be well and truly rotted down.

Is there anything else I should be asking or concerned about? Other than how am I going to get it to my plot.

Richard

Sounds good to me :D
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

My thoughts exactly  :D

She seems very keen for me to take some to (and anyone else I may know who wants some). I think she might have quite a bit of it  ::) :)

Now I wonder how I could persuade her to deliver it to the plot  ;)

If she has a trailer (and won't deliver for free), and you have an allotment association hut or similar, you could perhaps offer to pay a certain amount for a trailer load, take what you want and ask others to pay a donation per wheelbarrow load they take - we charge £1.50 per barrow in order to cover our outlay

The pasture may not have been treated but what about the hay and straw?
As it's well rotted it's easy to do a test. The details are in a thread somewhere but I think it's: Mix half and half with soil and grow a tomato plant in it. If it's leaves grow curly and deformed, it's got pyralid.
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".
