What do I grow up a trellis?
« on: February 13, 2009, 13:06 »
Just got a greenhouse off Freecycle. My plot backs onto the canal and I have been told that the kids can be a little... rambunctious, throwing stones over the fence and whatnot. My plan is to place a piece of trellis that I have (about 8/9' by 6/7') between the greenhouse and the canal, thereby screening it friom view (I hope)

The sun comes across the other side, so it won't be shaded.

What do I grow up there though? I'm thinking a climbing rose, trouble is, I'm not really a big fan of roses and if I did, it would have to be heavily scented. Any recommendations? How many plants would I need?

If not, what?

By the way, I am not sure if I have posted this on the right board, sorry...

I've got a nice evergreen clematis growing up a mesh fence.  Screening all year round.

Me too Ice They look especially gorgeous in spring and are easy to care for, no pruning etc. Can look a bit tatty in deepest winter though, and they do need tying in. You can also try honeysuckle to encourage the buzzies  :D

Sweet peas but they aren't permanent.  If you like Ivy, I hate it find it invasive but was amazed that a gardeners world prom was saying why not grow this.  Passion flower.  Wisteria but think takes ages and never got mine to flower.

Yes, I don't have a clematis, I have an evergreen honeysuckle ::) and it would be ideal screening.

Have a look at this one -
the Japanese honeysuckle is a variable species with some outstanding forms, such as 'Halliana'. The flowers are pale cream, turning darker yellow just before they fade, and appear from mid-June to late November. Generally evergreen, unless there's a particularly cold winter. The wild form, var. repens, has bronze foliage and darker flowers. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has given 'Halliana' its Award of Garden Merit (AGM)

I grew Lonicera Japonica at my last house and will grow it again here, and its a lovely evergreen climber rambler, wonderful scent etc but to do it justice it need a harsh pruning every April, and that would then not be much use as a screen until it grew again.
