The thing about peas is that they don't always do what we would like them to - they might start off using their tendrils to grasp whatever is around such as wire, netting, trellising and then they have a habit of growing up and then leaning out and grabbing each other until they all collapse  ::)

So to answer question 1 - a trough style pot (deep enough) will be fine, just make sure you keep it well watered.  As for hoping they'll grow up and attach themselves to the trellis on the fence, maybe put some twiggy pea sticks in the trough and lean them towards the trellis - the sticks will soon disappear in the foliage, and might even become a feature/talking point.

Peas will grow in a window box, but you will then need to make sure you water them well with relatively small amount of soil

Last time I grew any in containers I used the black florists' buckets that are around ten inches deep and they did just fine

I agree with babbyann - the little stinkers peas just won't climb consistently and prefer to flop all around so I do as DD does and 'fence' them in between 2 rows of stakes and strings. I'd even do it in guttering.

I did a small batch of mangetout in my tunnel this year and last. I used pea sticks for the first few inches, then used bits of string pegged down into the ground by tent pegs. The plants leapt straight from the sticks to the string and behaved very well, both times. I think it really depends how densely you've planted them.
