Do broad beans grow tendrils?
« on: February 10, 2009, 13:37 »
Are they called tendrills and do they grow them?

If not how do I help them stay up?

Ooh and also peas and french beans do they have tendrills and how do I stake/tie them?

Thanks

yours thickly, from near Wigan

No tendrils - shouldn't need too much staking, I tend to grow them in blocks and just put 4 canes 1 at each corner, bit of string or wire and they all help support each other, helps to avoid a really windy area on your plot if you can.
Hope that helps a bit.

No BB are a stocky more woody plant than peas or runner beans so stand on their own. helps to put string and posts along the row to stop falling sideways. Take out tops to defeat blackfly and keep plants stocky.
Peas appreciate canes or sticks to climb on by using own tendrils. Runner beans twist around canes in a row or a wigwam as their heads follow teh sun each day but best to tie them in initially to get them started
Sweet peas are very high maintanenace as best to take tendrils off and then tie in but so beautiful they deserve all the time I give them.

Peas, yes they will need a bit of support, I tend to put a lot of sticks, small branches in the row they will soon climb up them, although netting works as well, just a pain when your peas are finished, as with stick large twigs, branches - all on the compost heap

Surely you've seen my pea pics many times before & don't need to ask!

Actually this piccie probably shows it a bit better than the oft repeated ones of the peas in all their glory!

Just add more twine as they grow!

Dave
Wouldnt you plant another row between them or am I trying to fit to many in when I copy your idea  ??? :D
You know how many Ive to shove in this year, so want to maximise space

Actually, that pic depresses me more than your normal pic :'( ... I'm planning on putting two rows into the space that looks similar to your paths .... yer gonna come and tell me that's to close huh? In my defence, they will be successionally sown so by the time I start on the 2nd row, the first will be 2 months old

It is a petiole - leaf stalk - and when you think about it that's obvious ::)

PEAS

Ideal spacing = expected height of crop.

You do need to get between them to harvest or you'll miss loads & you'll be sorry! You may get away with narrower spacing if only growing two rows.

Yabba - After 2 months the first lot will not be far short of adult height & there will be little light getting in between the rows to consider planting another. Or did you mean 2 close spaced rows - big space - two close spaced rows?
