moving veg
« on: February 02, 2009, 11:22 »
Hello Henny Penny here

I haven't posted for ages but I wonder if anyone could advise about moving a large rhubarb and an asparagus plant (also quite big but in the wrong place)
Any advice gratefully received about how and when is the best time to do it.

Thanks very much

Rhubarb can be moved when dormant. You don't have to replant the whole thing, just chunks will do as long as they have a growing point/dormant shoot.
Asparagus resents being disturbed, more so as it gets older (according to the books anyway ;) ) so I wouldn't bother. If you want asparagus either buy year old crowns or grow your own from seed. That way you can be sure it's a good cropping variety, not just a wild self seeded plant.
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".
