Checked on the girls today to find three eggs, two with shells and one without one, just a raw egg in the corner of the nest box.  Is this bad news or just an irregularity?  Any info is of great help.  Kerry

How old are they?  It could be that she just hasn't got the hang of egg production and this is just a glitch.  She could need some extra calcium.  Good sources are oystershell grit, limestone flour or liquid calcium in the drinking water.

Hopefully just a one off, your very lucky they haven't eaten it :D
I occasionally get a soft shelled egg which if i'm not quick enough to retrieve they'll eat
The next one is normally ok though :)

Keep your eye out for the next one, don't worry unless she starts doing it all the time :D

Hi there

I used to keep chickens and sometimes I had an egg without a shell, but it was not very often.  There was a point when I had eggs with quite soft shells but I put a special grit and shell mix (I can't remember the correct word for it) in with the chickens for them to peck at and their shells became much harder again.

Hope that helps.

thanks everyone who replied, the girls are 18mths old and where ex battery hens up until 6 months ago.  I got them saturday from a man who was being shipped back to iraq and could no longer look after them.  They are such lovely girls.  i have bird grit with extra oyster shell in a coop dish for them, they eat every day.  Also i have been given them a wee pot of fromage yoghurt every second day along with plenty greens in the afternoon.  They eat layers mash and pellet in the morning. They are also partial to a bruised banana!  I think i spoil the girls!
