Should you make food and water available of a night time in the coop/nestbox?

Have been encouraging my girls into the coop at night with a handful of corn and then leaving some in there. Is this wise?

I always have water available for mine. I feed them three times a day and the last one is about an hour before bed time. ( I know this sounds like a lot!! I think a lot of people do just once) but I don't fill everything up - they have the daily amount just divided up!_
This way there is no food about at night to tempt rats and other things.

Hmmm....ok, will see how it goes. I leave the feeder in there all day with layers pellets and they feed as and when they want. Only extra i feed is some corn before the go to bed as a treat. They also have a rather large Turnip hanging up for them to peck at!

I may get another smaller drinker to put in the box of a night as i am concerned they are going without water for a long period of time as they are shut in from 1700hrs to around 1900hrs. In the summer it wont be so bad as i wont be putting them away until a few hours later, but it will be warmer so they may need the water then as well.

Trial and error eh!

Never had food or water in our house.

They go in, perch up and sleep. When they're opened up in the morning, they tend to go more for food than water immediately. No signs of dehydration.

Obviously it does no harm to keep food or water in. But may be more trouble than not for some. :)

i leave water in the shed all the time , and i also place a small bowl full of layers meal in thier food guttering but thats only cause i find it easier to get them in of a night time . in a way i am lucky now as they are getting used to the parakeets going to roost at about 4 pm so when they fly over the run the girls are already aiming for bed .

I have dry food in the henhouse at night but not water; I used to have water in with them too, but they just kicked it about and the house started to be damp.

I lock them up everynight and let them out in the morning and, just as Rob, said they go for food before water so I don't fret about them needing a drink.
