Parafin heater help!
« on: January 01, 2009, 16:35 »
i have a parafin heater and spare wick for my greenhouse given to me from a friend of a friend but i dont know how to use it.I had it alight earlier but am unsure about the wick bit.How much of it needs to poke out and will the heater go out if the wick burns down. Also how quick do the wicks burn?
I wont need it until spring but it was quite nice sitting in the greenhouse today with a cuppa and the heater on  :)

The wicks burn very slowly, don't worry about it burning out overnight for instance.

You'll know if there's too much wick showing, as the flame will "gutter" and smoke, if it does, just turn it back until it's a nice steady flame.

It doesn't do any harm just to clean the top of the wick daily with a gentle rub with an old rag, this will get rid of any carbon and also encourage the genie to appear!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thanks DD  :D I did have a bit of smoke but loved the smell too.Spent the day in the garden and couldnt resist lighting the heater even though i wasnt sure how it worked.Ithink i need to devide up the greenhouse with a plastic sheet as its 14 x 8.5 and just heat one half when the time comes. :D
