Hello from the North East of Scotland
« on: May 08, 2006, 21:49 »
Hello,

I just thought I would introduce myself, I have been lurking on this forum for a while now.

I have been awarded an allotment here in sunny Aberdeen, after having waited for what seems like forever :!:

My allotment was in a pretty bad state when I first surveyed it in March   .  But I am now starting to get it under control  :) and meeting my neighbours, as the weather gets better - they all seem like a very nice, helpful bunch.  I do, however, seem to be a the youngest plot holder here by a long way (I am 26) - allotments are'nt trendy here in Aberdeen yet.

I have planted some salad vegetables (Rocket, Salad Burnett and Lambs Lettace), Garlic, and just on Sunday planted 2 Marrows and 2 Squash (a bit early I know, but many fingers, toes and everything else crossed that no frost comes, and I have back-ups).  I also have onions, strawberrys, kale, cauliflower, brocolli, and many herbs currently taking over my house and balcony.

I look forward to participating in the forum in the future (where my limited knowledge allows).

Hi Dawn!

And I thought I was in the North in Sheffield (that's what comes of originally being from London though - Nottingham is North to me ;))

I'm about the same age as you (25) and there aren't many people in my age group that are into allotments / growing their own here either :(  I've hoping to start a local allotment / gardening interest group for Sheffield soon though, so perhaps that will help me find them ;)

Looking forward to chatting with you! :D

Just thought I would be the first to say hello.

I was born and lived in Aberdeen until 7 years ago when I moved to Buckinghamshire.

Nice to see someone on here from my home town  :tongue2:

Hello and welcome :)
I have a sort of theory.
When you are teens, gardening can hardly compete with clubbing.
Then you settle down and get kids (no time for anything)
Then your kids go away (Yippee!) and you are too old for clubbing so you get a lottie.
There's probably as many holes as truth in the theory though.
I find it strange that I had problems coping with a garden when I was in my 20s and now I'd look on those 'major' jobs as a quick half a day. I'm not quite as fit as I was then either.

My only experience of Aberdeen is sitting on the beach (in August) with my Aran sweater on. It was a bit breezy. Very fresh air though, not like London.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Hi Dawn,

I'm in Dundee. Just got my allotment in February. £18 a year with West Law Allotment Association, which means I'm just down from the war memorial on top of the Law hill, looking west down the river Tay towards Perth. Gorgeous prospect when sitting on my bench under the tree after a hard day's work, especially with the weather we've been having for the last fortnight.
