URGENT help please
« on: November 30, 2008, 09:17 »
One of my hens is sick.
This is the third day and I have  bought her into the house.
She is hunched and producing a watery egg coloured pooh. She is drinking water but  then moments later seems to loose interest
her comb is normal.
last night her breathing was laboured but now is fine.
Is she at her end or is there something I can do

Hi Seeoh3hens

Welcome to the Hen House :)

Sorry to hear you have a poorly girl :(

Could you give a bit more info??
How old is she?
Has she laid an egg ever or recently?
Is she eating at all?

Have you had a look at our poop section does any of those resemble her poo?
http://www.chat.allotment-garden.org/viewtopic.php?t=17568

Also have a feel under her wing - then feel under one of your other birds, does the sick one feel warmer??

Sarah :D

I'm not sure when she laid her last egg as I have other hens, but  production has slowed down alot which I though was due to the chnage of season.
Can't see a pooh picture to resemble the yellow pooh, which looks like watery egg, as prior to it being scrambled...if that makes sense

It might be that she's egg bound?
Can you have a feel gently round her abdomen, and down towards her legs if she's egg bound then you might be able to feel an egg there.
Is her vent puckering as if trying to push ??

The only other thing that springs to mind is egg peritonitis

Sarah :)

Does sound like she could have a broken egg inside her.

If this is the case, she may not survive it.

An gentle internal examination with a lubricated finger may help you to decide. Does she smell at all ?

It sounds to me as if she either needs the care of a vet or to be put out of her misery

TBH, no idea but maybe pieces of broken shell ?

It was just an idea that I thought may have helped.
