Soil quality!?
« on: November 24, 2008, 19:31 »
Hi everyone, another 'silly' question i'm affraid!

My veg patch is approx 15" by 8" quite small so i need to get things right!

The earth has been covered for many years by a tarpaulin and shingle, which i removed around a year ago.

I am planning on growing in it;  early potatoes, parsnips, radish, runner beans and onions.

I am wondering though if the soil will need nutrients added or whether it will be ok, i did grow limited crops this year, adding growmore as i turned the soil in spring.

Do you think i should add something this winter, green manure, manure, bone meal etc

I havnt done any winter digging yet and the patch is completely void of crops.

Hi Jonathan_w and welcome to the forum, no question is a silly question. I would dig lots of well rotted manure into the soil as this will increase the nutrients that you will need for planting out. If you dig in the manure roughly and let the winter frosts do the rest

Hi, thanks for that.

I guess that needs to be done quite soon, i only moved in last spring so didnt have time for winter digging.

Will source some manure - well rotted soon as!

Although the garden is small, i do have a normal sized glass green house, and a large patio area, not sure if i can use those to my advantage this year, after the lack of success this year i think i better concentrate on one area at a time!!

I am waiting for a dry spell so i can get my plot dug over as at the moment the soil it far to wet!! You will be able to grow a lot of veg in the greenhouse and in containers on your patio so you will be able to utilise all the space you have.
Good luck!!
