Garlic
« on: November 02, 2008, 17:34 »
Hi,

Looking for some solid advice. I have planted my garlic, but am looking for help in what to cover it with over the winter, I had a good turn out of garlic last year and am using my own bulbs. Have been given so much advice by well meaning family, who, i'm not sure know a great deal...
Any advice, much appreciated..

hi talluar,

maybe you could pop in to the welcome to the forums section just to say a bit about your self and say hello ?

I don't cover my garlic as they like cold weather for the cloves to form

As long as the garlic is in the soil for winter, it doesn't need any cover. It really loves cold weather. Only problem could be pigeons (aka flying rats) pulling them out when they sprout a bit.
Come spring I like to mulch mine with straw, partly to keep the soil moist and partly to keep weeds down. If your get very rainy springs and/or summers you might want to pass on the mulch, but do keep them weeded.
