Blood in egg
« on: October 20, 2008, 10:16 »
I found some blood in one of our eggs, none are fertilized as our boy is too young to be doing the deed, should I be worried or is this  quite normal?
I think it was from one of the older hens

Hi Rainbowspells

Sounds to me like it is a blood spot, these are more likly to occur as a hen gets older.
It happens when a bit of blood or tissue is released with the yolk during the egg making process :)

Another small point is that  blood spots/blemishes are more prevalent in brown eggs than in white!!  I did read this in a government paper.
"Meat Spots in Eggs
Meat spots are usually brown in colour and associated with the
albumen rather than the yolk. They often consist of small pieces
of body tissue, such as the internal wall of the oviduct. Their
incidence varies according to bird age and health and also due
to strain (breed) differences. In brown shelled eggs, they are
more difficult to identify without breaking the shell and there is
also evidence that brown laying hens are more likely to produce
them than white hens."
