Farm yard manure and mushroom compost
« on: October 08, 2008, 17:46 »
I have just bought 20 bags of farm yard manure and mushroom compost being delivered tommorow for £15 to put on the veggie patch as it seemed cheaper than running to the stables by car.
Have i done the right thing?i asked what manure it was and the reply was "s**t my dear"
I should have been clearer and asked if it is horse manure.
So is farm yard manure ok to use and mushroom compost? (what is mushroom compost?)
I am confused, will i get mushrooms growing everywhere?

i think any manure should be ok as long as it comes from animals that dont eat meat....after all thats what they spray all over the fields!

if there are horses at the farm then its most likely horse manure as manure form any other animal isnt so likely to be collected and got rid of.

re the mushrooms..... dont know the answer to this one....we have horses and usually mushrooms just grow in the field....this year we have had NONE  so i was assuming this was to do with the weather!
so i dont think it means you will get mushrooms all over your veggie patch, but if you do then surely thats a bonus  :)

Mushroom compost will actually be spent mushroom compost. i.e. what mushrooms have been grown in.

You may find this link useful.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I would'nt have thought it was any worse than cow manure....when you think of some of the feeds that cattle eat....some that are pumped full of anti-biotics and also the grass they eat that's been sprayed with herbicides and insecticides etc etc!  :D

I've used mushroom compost in the past when growing toms direct in the soil & not encountered anything other than a bonus crop of mushrooms!

We have used mushroom compost several times for the flower garden.  It smells a bit like a woodland in damp weather.  Its not a particularly strong smell.  You do get a few mushrooms growing but not that many.  None of the plants that the compast came into contact had any problems.
