HELP! Advice on how to stop chucks being broody
« on: October 02, 2008, 09:47 »
I was wondering if anyone can give me some advice as to how to stop 2 of my chucks being broody.

One has been broody for 2 months and one started this week :(

As its so late in the season i really dont want them to stay broody as i would like a few eggs!!

Any advice will be great

Thanx

keep booting them out of the coop and stop then from nesting.  I've seen a isolation coop where they've got nowhere to nest and this can snap them out of it.

I do keep getting them off the nest but this causes problems with the others laying.  When i know they have all laid i shut the "sleeping" quarters off.

How would i go about making an isolation coop?  Are they the ones that are all wire so the chucks cant snuggle down?

Hi one of my chooks went broody 2 weeks ago I tried putting ice eggs under her as advised but she just pushed them out of the way then I tried a broody cage which has a wire floor which is raised off the ground with bricks the idea is to cool their bottoms this seems to have worked I did feel sorry for her and once the others had laid their eggs I let her into the garden with them and blocked the nest box off putting her back at night today she is not showing any interest in going into the house. No eggs yet though

That's the kind of thing I've seen (i've not tried this - my broody girl is sitting on 5 eggs at the moment), like a dog travelling cage, obviously with shelter from the elements but no where to get comfortable.  Other ideas are putting a bag of ice cubes under them (wouldn't like it myself, but I'd probably get up :D)

Hope this helps
