Green manures
« on: September 30, 2008, 19:29 »
On our allotment we have had to stop using animal manure so am going to get some Alfalfa, Mustard, Winter tares and Trefoil.
I have grown green manures before but can never remember what ones.
I leave them in the ground till mature then strim down and rotavate in.
Now weather it dose any good the next year I can not tell.
This year I am going to mix all the seeds up and try a mixed bag.
Any thought on this idea?
I have not used farm manure for several years as I did come up with large welts on both my legs and arms and was off work for 8 weeks.
I'm lost without my SatNav.

Hi

Wouldn't use Mustard in that lot as 1. It's a brassica & so would upset any rotation 2. it doesn't over winter 3. it matures in 10 weeks or so.

I'm using Hungarian grazing Rye which is coming up a treat & mustard where the tatties were.

Some good points on this site about Green Manures.

PUP!!
Top tip for camping....don't go.

Thanks PUP for the advise.
I have sent off the order for 4 differant seeds but will plant the mustard on its own.
Thanks again

Interesting indeed :)

I'm a great fan of the idea but haven't actually got as far as growing any yet.

I've just ordered a load of field beans as I thought I'd 'missed the window' for alfalfa. OK I know it was a big window, I still missed it.  Am I right it's too late or not?
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".
