Can anyone tell me please if I can save the seeds from a supermarket bought butternut squash and sow them. Will they come true or similar?

Yes you can save the seed and butternut will probably come true as well but there is no guarantee.

How would you know that you weren't buying an F1 Hybrid variety?  They certainly wouldn't breed true.    :?

If you go ahead, I reckon they'd need a period of dormancy after drying to simulate winter.  Maybe even refrigeration.  Let us all know the results if you go ahead.  It will either work, or it won't work.

Maybe you could dry 'em, roast 'em and salt 'em for munching like pumpkin seeds.  They are yummy (and dead expensive).

Thanks for the advice, it doesn't really matter if they come true or not as I only want to try it for fun and not the show bench!! Not at that stage yet lol.... I will put them in the fridge for a while and sow them in April - May and see how they go..

We did this last year and it worked fine. They tasted lovely infact we still have a couple left. They took until September to crop though. I had given up on them. They fruited much later than the other squash and only fruited once unlike the others which we picked all summer
