Duck Pond Water
« on: September 17, 2008, 08:15 »
Hello all....
We've now added two Indian Runners to our flock and to keep them happy we've built a pond. The ducks love it, I reckon it holds about 100 gallon of water.
The problem is that the water turns rotten after a week, the dirt and bits of bark, straw etc i did expect, but the the smell i did not.

Any ideas, how often should i drain it and refill it?

The hens/ducks are drinking it and im a bit worried it may make them ill, so i've given them a water dish

 Thanks in advance  :D  :D
??? I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous... ???

Hi Fire

In the summer I do all my ponds every other day, but I have 13 ducks & 5 Geese

In the winter I do it twice a week :)

Yup if you leave it too long it will smell and hen's can get a nasty from drinking green water, although I would imagine if it's anything like ours your water is muddy coloured not green

Yip it's a dirty browny greeny color, i've made my mind up, im going to fit a sump drain and run a pipe out, a bit like a bath plug hole, so i can flush it out.

Funny you should say that. I reckon during the summer, our water consumption was at least twice the norm. :?

Something to bear in mind for any prospective duck or goose-keepers out there.

I have a little pond that contains about 145L of water. In the summer it got changed about once a week at least. I emptied it with a bucket onto the veg patch etc (which makes everything grow like mad) which is fine when things need watering but not so good when the garden is already practically under water. It now goes down the drain which is a shame but change it a little less frequently.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

Pity it can't be stored and the smell neutralised. It'd be good for the spring.

I wouldn't have them if I was on a meter, or maybe I'd give them access to the well :?

I still think that would be a good bet Sarah. Get yourself a submersible pump with a few metres head and draw some off.

See if it smells or has bits/creatures in it.

If not, you could risk it as pond water I'd have thought. Or just bottle it and sell it on ebay
Bit like Peckham spring water
