Hens - Warrens Cock - ?
« on: September 16, 2008, 18:06 »
Hi all,

This has been puzzling me over the couple of weeks, you see lots of warrens which are all hens ok, but you dont see warren cocks or am i missing something.

And are warrens, hybrids the ones that are locked up in battery barns, if not what is the parentage i know its a simple answer but i'm thick

can anyone give me a nod in the right direction?

Thanks

Hello, Yes warrens are the hybrids that battery farms use but also they are free rangers as they lay ots of eggies, the cockerels aren't used for breeding and apparently no good for meat so unfortunately they tend to be used as snake food shortle after they hatch ( warren chicks are ginger if hens and yellow if they are boys!!) hope this helps and if im wrong I too will learn something new today!! the parentage of a warren is a light sussex hen crossed with a rhode island red cockerel :D
thinks her guardian angel`s gone on strike !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think mine are warrens - the girl is def a brown 'battery' type and the boy is white - when they were babies ( Living eggs) the boy was a white chick and the girl a yellow one. Lady who delivered said this was always the case as sex linked.

yes they are, the same as a blackrock is the same as a blackstar etc. They all have different names even though they have the same parentage, its just the different breeders have their own names for them. As they can say their parent stock are best etc.

As we've discussed in other posts, all the brown hybrids aren't exactly the same, but basically they all seem to be a RIR x Lt sussex mixture. (so are the Ambers, but that's the other way round,) however, they aren't a straight cross, they have bits of other things in them too.

Just about all the hybrids belong to Hendrix Genetics in Holland, and if you look on their website, under Products you can see pics of all the breeds. And they are almost identical, but with the odd difference.  Like Babcocks are almost the same, but they have black tails, where most of the brown hybrids have white or creamy tails.  And some are a lighter brown or more ginger in.

Its very interesting, but very confusing too!!!!
