Easiest are courgettes and most tragic failure is cauliflower.  Carrots grew but looked like space aliens.
Cheese makes everything better.

Easiest - swiss chard

Hardest - beetroot. I just cant do em. Hardly any germinate. Then those that do are scrawny little things that stay as a shoot and dont grow into roots. Two years running.

This thread has really made me laugh! Found the easiest things to grow were Tomatillos & chillies. The hardest has to be cauliflower & broccoli. And don't talk to me about peas! Beetroot Queen & Sheehah, are we bothering with peas next year? I don't understand them! In the 2 years on our lotty I think we've managed a total of 11 pods out of 3 different varieties. Oh, and I agree about Chard, easy peasy lemon squeezy! Even if you don't eat it, makes your lotty look lush.

It's great being self-sufficientish, getting the fresh air & exercise, trying to be organic & wholesome & self righteous. But some things are best left to Captain Birds Eye. Peas is one of them!

I find it most strange that people have difficulty growing peas as these simply require planting and left to their own devices until harvest. Stop trying so hard with all the new-fangled methods, dig a trench the width of a spade about 3" deep and throw the peas in.

My easiest crops are peas, beans (broad and runner), chard and other beets, potato, which leads me to ask why so many posters find swiss chard very easy while failing with beetroot? They are virtually the same plant.

Most difficult has to be outdoor tomatoes and the carrots always get eaten by slugs.
