Short sighted chook?

one of mine makes funny honky noises sometimes too! Speaking of beaks, one of mine has a longer bottom beak than the top.Why is this & should it be trimmed/filed so they're equal lengths :?: She free ranges,so i thought it would have worn down by now.it was like that when we got her.

Hi Chookaholic

Are your girls ex -batts?

It sounds like it's been de-beaked, when they take a section of the top beak to stop them attacking each other. I have 2 leghorns that have had this done, I feel really sorry for them  :(
It doesn't seem to interfer too much with day to day stuff but I have read that they don't find it as easy to preen when this has been done.

A photo would help to be certain :)

Hi Vember,no she's not an ex-batt,I got them from a nice farm.I have 4 & she's the only one like it.She doesn't seem to have trouble pecking, unless it's on a hard surface like the patio. Then she just has to have a couple of goes!

Mine that have been de beaked have problems with stuff on hard surfaces too :)

Does the beak look as if it's been trimmed or just over grown?

Not that it matters really I was just curious best thing I think
if she's managing is to leave well alone, from what Ive read beak trimming isn't nice.

the bottom beak looks like it's grown quicker than the top one.I think that's why it seems more noticable lately. She's had it since i got her though.I will have to see if i can get a decent photo.
