Photos of coops - homemade
« on: August 13, 2008, 21:38 »
Hi all,

We are now after nifty ideas for building our coop and possibly a run.  We are on the lookout for wood etc and have been given info off loads of people. The more the better :!: We intend on starting off with about 4 hens and a run, area approx 12 sq mtr and then allowing for free range 3 / 4 days when we not at work  - this area will be approx 215 sq mtr  We have set aside approx 6' x 4' for our coop by approx 4' deep but we have manouverability.  Any photos you can post will be a great help and any suggestions too  :) look forward to it.
Thanks, Matilda from Staffs...

If you look through some of the posts in the Hen House Matilda you'll get some good ideas.

You could wade through the poultry pictures HERE if you have a day to spare. Might be the odd coop or two.

This is the small house that Brian made for me when we first moved to Lincolnshire

I'm creosoting this one at the moment!

And this is the big one that used to be the goat house!!

Always so impressed by your hen sheds Grannie!

ours are not handmade, but are modified from other uses.. the new bigger (beige) coop is a modified dog kennel
The purple one was an old guinea pig hutch we had.
Both are in use at the moment was we have chicks n' mum in the purple one and had 4 birds in the other one till recently.. we're down to 1 now, but she seems happy on her own - we're giving her the option of moving back into the purple house if she wants though.

My efforts...

And some recent shots when I cleaned out last...

Looking up towards the apex at the front, showing the 4 ventilation holes...

The removal side, viewed from the inside face. The bolts hold it in place...

A slightly weird angle of the nestbox, that bolts onto the side..

The felt has a wide band of bitumen sticking it down round the edges. It leaked like a seive when I first built it, so the felt was an afterthought.

Underneath is the hanging feeder and drinker.

Oh Bwian!!!!!   Do you know what Rob is saying about you????   lolol.

He does look a grumpy old goat on that one doesn't he????

I've got the small one dismantled at the moment Porrfor, and I'm going to creosote it while its down, as its the one we had mite in last March, not been used since I cleared them out, but I've still got mites in my layers house, can't get rid of the blooming things!  Just relieved there's no sign of them in the chicks house!!!

will have a go with this piccy posting......

DSCF4306.JPG

That was[/i] the basic frame for the first house.  The shiplap was cut to fit within the frame and was 90cm long.  Hubby then kept adding bits to the outside of the frame and the house grew too large.  Consequently, he was extremely surprised when the roofing piece was too small!  :?   As a result, the house was dismantled and hubby started again.  (It wasn't complete anyway.)

.....when pics have been taken of the current house in progress, I will post.

Hi Matilda,

Here's a few shots of mine which I made out of tongue & groove.  I don't have a run as the garden is large and secure so can't help you there.  I made it high enough to get a wheel barrow underneath for easy cleaning, put more vent holes in due to the heat out here and replaced the pop with a mesh one as they seemed a bit scared when it suddenly went dark.  I also had to staple fine sand paper on the roosts because they were slippery    If I made another I would have the nest box at the opposite end to the pop so it'd be darker. Hope this helps.  Good luck with yours and piccies please when it's finished  :!:
