One thing I will say to people thinking of building their own henhouses.  When Brian made the big house for the goats, he built it inside out, so the goats couldn't get their horns bhind bits of wood inside.  Funny, they never bothered trying to get the wood off the outside!!!!

But having your walls flush inside makes cleaning out a lot easier, not so many nooks and crannies for poo to get stuck in!!!!

Question

I want to attach the wheels to the bottom of my cabin. This is a project of mine.  Yes it is in my head at the moment, and I have started to collect the materials though.  Shhhh dont tell the OH.
I have found jockey wheels on the internet but have not found how to attach to the side of the cabin.  Can you help?
Stuart

Roughlee

Nice design, have you thought of using stablisers wheels off a kids bike?

Thanks but I think that it would be too heavy for them.

Don't forget, if you're on soft ground, they will prob sink in before you can shift it. Either place on hard standing or get some wide, soft wheels.

Having made mine in the kitchen and moved it outside in pieces, they are flippin heavy once assembled

What Annie says is really good advice. I didn't do this and regret it. Loads of little crevices to clean out.

Nice woodwork pep.

I'd considered TnG for the cladding but the B&Q stuff was very thin and the floorboard thickness was getting expensive.  For my version I used featherboard from a local fence manufacturer.  £20 for the cladding, the 3x2 was spare (but would have been about £20) and the ply and bits another £20, Technically under the £50 budget  :-)

Still not quite completed yet, the egg box will slide in on the right.

Now all I have to do is build some steps so that the GF can reach into the egg box.  :-)  Oops

LOL, the designs you've all got look great.  What interests me though is the fact that I'm building a house but I've never 'measured' a chicken.  Some of the door ways look like you could fit a horse through, others look big enough for a rabbit, same goes for the egg boxes on the side.

If chickens could talk, I wonder if they'd be sitting in my egg box asking "Does my bum look big in this?"

Good point Rob about the soft ground.  Back to the drawing board.  My problem is that when the barn was developed our farm house lost the rights to have a shed. So I can have a shed (shhhhh it gonna be a big coop but dont tell the OH.) as long as it is not permanent. Also I can move it around the field if it is on wheels (keeps it away from the horses).    My problem is that I can purchase wheels (thinking wheel barrow wheels) but how do I attach them to the frame?

A long piece of threaded rod in U bolts is an easy way.

The other way is to buy two sack trucks and fit them under the shed. (Floor wheels)

Boys -  before buying anything have you posted a wanted ad on your local freecycle site? Worth a try I think, I got some 3"x2" for posts off there and the kind man even cut it for me!!

This is how the house is looking at the moment.

That is a view from the back - you can see the side door for access to interior nest box and ease of cleaning.

The aforementioned nest box - which may I add - Ahem! I made!  :D

View of the rafters from inside the house.

We've the poop-drawer to complete (my first one totally wrong size now hubby altered house!), Chicken's access door to attach and a ramp/ladder to make (my job!   )  - then all we need is a run and some CHOOKS!!!

...sorry...can't quite get the hang of photos.......
