Does my sweetcorn look ready?
« on: August 10, 2008, 23:13 »
Here are some pics of my sweetcorn taken on my mobile phone this evening.

Should I be picking them now or do I need to wait a while?  :?

If they are ready I'll need to microwave them as we have no kitchen at the moment! Any ideas on how to microwave them :?:

It's the first time I've tried sweetcorn and I'm too scared to peep inside them

I could give up chocolate but I'm not a quitter.

Third opinion - I don't think so.

I usually find the tassles have to dry back a little bit more.

I know what the text books say, about sticking your thumbnail into a kernel & getting the milky sap & all that.

What I do is carefully peel back from the top, are there yellow kernels, 4 or 5 rows from the end? Or are they still small & white?

Mine are a couple of weeks away yet at least.

(Sorry Aggy  )
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

The one I picked the other day (after drooling on here at someone else's) looked like those snap dragon, and although it was nice, it wasn't quite ready and would've been nicer if I'd left it a bit longer.
As DD described, it was more white in colour than yellow.
It was still great though, cos my first ever corn  :D
Keep us posted?

Sweetcorn tastes better microwaved rather than boiled. Just put the full cob, leaves tassels everything into the microwave for 2 minutes or till hot. Then take all the outer bits off just leaving the cob and add butter or whatever you prefer. Leaving the covering on prevents loss of fluid and flavour and helps to cook it.

  Dave

P.S. I haven't a clue whether they are ready or not

Sounds good robbo, will try it that way next time - WHEN it's ready!
I look at it every day, check tassels etc, have a squeeze....it's no good, there must be more to life

Agree with DD and Sadgit my tassels look like that too (must see the doctor   ) but the cobs are definitely not ready, still watery and white, reckon another couple of weeks before they are milky and yellow.

Ok... you've convinced me!

I'll wait a little longer (sorry Aggie!)

I'd prefer them to be ready when I've got my kitchen back so that I can prepare a good meal to go with them!

Thanks for your input everyone  :D

Anyone ever eaten corn-on-the-cob raw?  Tastes absolutely delicious - and I've only tried shop bought ones.  Home grown ones must be lovely!

Sounds strange, but really tasty.

A lot of my corn is ready now.  When you burst a kernel with your finger nail the juice is milky (not watery or creamy). Tastes deliciously sweet  :D
