I know what you mean - and that's exactly the way I'd do it. I'd stagger the sowing by a few weeks, so that they weren't all ready at once. One row at a time.

i agree with dd it is much better to just draw a drill out about 3" deep and sow into this. i use the ridger behind my honda to pull the drill out with as my rows are 60ft long
i think good fresh seed helps & i find i get better germination with my own saved seed than bought in stock
my late sown peas are about 9" high now ready for the sticks to go in
grow 3 varieties fortune for sowing in november so i can have some really early ones to eat followed by misty then the good old faithful hurst green shaft. the sow misty again mid july for the late crop

johnhar,

Do you save pea seeds the same as beans, ie leave them to dry on the plant and then retrieve peas/seeds when pods are crispy? Or pick fresh, pod them and then dry?
I have lots and lots of petit pois that have gone beyond their best on the plant and are drying/crisping up - would love to make use of them next season, rather than just dumping them.

I have several varieties of heritage peas which I'm trying to perpetuate.

Take those pods off now, let them dry & remove the peas.

Make sure the peas are well dried before storing in an airtight container in a cool dry place.
