I've just been offered a silkie cockerel for free! As  we have to rehome our RIR cross cockerel (attacking the children and now had a couple of goes at me) I think it might be a good idea. She says they are very friendly and not quite as noisy as ours - she lives 10 doors up and hears ours calling to hers!

Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

Hi  just ot say keep an eye on her crop -might be worth having a quick check in the morning just to make sure its empty? I only mention that after a massage some fluid had come up. Perhaps some natural yogurt as a treat to be on the safe side, they do love yogurt, only stand well back!

Just been to pick up some plaster via freecycle and the couple had a dozen polands and silkies (difference?) running round the garden. About 6 weeks old I think. They plan to sell most of them on up to about £30/£40 each

Brian will probably like silkies better when I tell him that!!!!! lol)
And the difference between a Silkie and a Poland Rob, is they are difference breeds!!!!!

It's amazing how much they can cram into their crops ! They can be like a balloon and then a few hours later go down to virtually nothing.

It's the liquid that could be a sign of something nasty going on. But if it's empty in the moening and she's behavign fine then don't worry. If her crop is a bit swollen before she races to the food, then you might want to keep massaging and do the bio yoghurt as Foxy says.

They are comical when they eat that. It's worth a video.

I must have a look up about the different breeds some day. I'm as ignorant now as i was this time last year !!

All I know is. some of them had the big hairdo. Some black, some gold.

And VERY expensive. You wouldn't need 22 acres to breed them either!!

I think it has to be bio because that is supposedly 'active' but natural might well be the same thing.

I would imagine the small yakult pots or similar would do it but don;t know if they have other ingredients that may upset them. We get the onken large pot for about 90-odd pence.

It doesn't go to waste

I did. They throw it everywhere. They dip their beaks in, get it all over their face, then shake their heads and it covers every surface for 2 yards !!
Then they peck it off each others beaks. Really is most amusing to watch.  :)

No idea on quantity but I put out a couple of dessertspoons full for 6. I'm sure they'd eat the hwole pot if you let them but you might see some strange poo for a while.
