Yeehah - first proper harvest

I know it's not much compared to what those of you who've been doing this for years get, but I got a carrier bag of broad beans and swiss chard today - and I'm really chuffed!

I also saw the first tassels on the sweetcorn - got so excited I phoned DH who promptly got entirely the wrong end of the stick

I'm not surprised :) I, too, don't have the harvests of everyone else here (I use a tiny patch in my back garden) but it's still so awesome and exciting, no matter how big the harvest :D

This is my first year of allotment growing and have had mixed harvests really which have taught me tons for next year!  MORE peas, right amount of broad beans, less french beans, right amount of courgettes, not sure about the spuds yet but know now to harvest them sooner than I have for new spuds, leeks look about right amount at the moment but so did the onions til I brought them home and lets just say I gave one lot to the window cleaner and think my self and friend down the road will not need to be buying onions for the rest of the year, and very possibly a few other people too!  the rasps have been great, strawbs less so, the broccoli was planted out too big so bolted.  will need more corn I think too coz I'm fairly sure that that feeezes well.

but its great isn't it picking and eating what you grew yourself!!

Hi Hawthorne.

I'm growing Swiss Chard as well. Bright + Yellow Lights. Never tasted this before. Can't wait as my rows are doing well at present.
Top tip for camping....don't go.

Size (of your crop) doesn't matter.

Just putting some food on the table is "simply the best"  8)

I like to start off cooking the stalks in a little olive oil (and garlic if you like!) over a fairly gentle heat until they are nearly tender. Then add the chopped up leaves, and cook until they wilt. Season, and munch!

(Chard doesn't cook down nearly as much as spinach, so it's easy to end up with rather a lot to eat   - I'd forgotten that until last night!)

Isn't it just great getting your first real harvest.  My lottie soil is clay so I was not confident, but hey!  We've had cabbages (spring),onions, early pots, now the beans are running rampant.  My carrots are the best they have ever been, with no carrot fly!!!. Peas are doing well - summer purple sprouting and sprouts to come later but going great guns.  Marvellous I say Marvellous - really happy about it :tongue2:  :tongue2:

The first year's harvest is extra special, but I find that my first harvest every year always puts a smile on your face  :D  :D  :D
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
