Normally, you only need to stop eating eggs while they're on anti-biotics and for a period afterwards. I think it's about 1 week but you should be told by the vet or on the bottle.

Baytril seems to be commonly used, so if you google that, it may tell you the egg withdrawal period.

HELP!!! which anti biotic is safe
Hi Aunty thanks for asking.
Sadly our dog attacked Maggie (pied suffolk), the dog was wearing a muzzle but still managed to tear the skin on her back and side.
She has been at the vets since yesterday and last night was stitched up ....... yes we are crazy enough to foot the vets bill to at least give her a chance...... she's our favourite and because she is the only one laying right now, or was!
There are some patches where they could not pull the skin together and the vet doesn't know a great deal about chickens but hopes the skin will mend like ours does?
They say that now we need to worry about infection but the only antibiotic they have for chickens specifically means we can't ever eat her eggs again, but we gave permission for them to try other antibiotics not necessarily tested for chickens.
So any advice about care or antibiotics is welcome.

Would it be worth speaking to toomanygirls ?

She had a nasty run in with a fox but managed to nurse one of her casualties back to health.

As far as I know, she's made a complete recovery from a similar situation.

very interesting article.
The principle is very much based on human wound care and the granulation process - where keeping wounds "dry" is very much outdated. You could in this case use a hydrocolloid dressing instead which would provide a moist area for optimum granulation plus a semi permeable membrane to keep bacteria out. Chemists have dressings like "comfeel" or "granuflex" also Compeed is the same thing which we use for blisters. Might be an easier dressing to keep on. They are easy to peel off as well.
Not sure about your music tastes Auntie!

I think that's your answer. Your vet doesn't actually know the egg withdrawal period so is playing it safe.

THink its summed up with the fact that your vet doesn't know about chickens. Lifetime egg withdrawal would be like saying thet a woman who had had antibiotics should never have children (and you should certainly never eat them  ). Sounds nonsense to me.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.
