Daft Tomato Question
« on: July 17, 2008, 22:36 »
Hi

Probably a really daft question, but never having grown tomatoes before - how long do they usually take to ripen - we are growing gardeners delight

Thanks

I grow GD in a small unheated greenhouse. I start seed early March and pick the first at the end of July.
You should find that GD ripens in succession. I once tried a popular variety, Moneymaker or something similar, and the trusses grew until all the toms were full size than all ripened at once. Useless!

You can speed up the ripening process by placing a ripe banana near the plants in the greenhouse

Useful tip on the banana, I have loads of GD that are nice and green and was wondering when I might be able to start eating them.

I also have a moneymaker - so I guess I will have to be prepared to make lots of pasta sauces all of a sudden!

There are three signs of old age. The first is your loss of memory, the other two I forget.

Or sling some Tesc* vine ripened ones in.

They're pumped full of ethylene gas!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
