Parsnips, is it too late for some baby ones?
« on: July 18, 2008, 10:28 »
I'm trying to fill our plot and make sure that we don't have to be spending money on veg down at Sainsburys this winter. We are keen on parsnips and they cost quite a bit at the shops. Last year was my first year and I did quite well with parsnips. We are a bit behind this year though so didn't get any in. I'm happy to settle for baby ones. Is it too late?

If it isn't too late then I need to sort out where to put em. We have a raised bed filled with a mixture of our allotment soil and some worm compost. Will that be ok? I know roots don't like newish manure, but will they be ok with the compost?

Thanks

I think you have to stop planting them at the end of April, or at least that's what my packet says, but I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be along later to tell you.

have a go but it think that you may have to let them grow over a longer period and let them fully grow .
still leave em in till march /april may be a good size then
dont think you can eat parsnips as baby ones but may be wrong , good luck.

Im not sure about baby ones, but you do need frost to improve the flavour on snips..it just depends how long you want to wait for them

I'd be saying try it...unless the cost of the seeds is prohibitive what's the harm?...either way you'll either get some baby parsnips or nowt...much the same as now ;) I might give it a go too in a container...see what I get :)

give it a try so long as they germinate fairly quickly you will get something. Put them in the freezer for an hour or two to replicate the frost and you will have a speciality.
