Which feeds for which veg?
« on: July 11, 2008, 13:32 »
I have buckets of pelleted chicken manure, and blood fish and bone. I also have regular tomato luiquid food. I'm not sure which food to give to which veg.

I have:

PSB, Calabrese, brussels, kale (Havn't fed)
onions (Chicken manure pellets)
courgettes, tomatoes, peppers, aubergines, chillis (all been getting luiqid feed)
sweetcorn (havn't fed)
raspberries (horse manure and bfb)
parsnips (havn't fed)
runnerbeans, peas, mange tout.(havn't fed)

Any advice would be appreciated.
Liv.

A way too big question, Livvy, I'm not surprised no answers. Start with reading somewot, on the home page John has a very detailed piece on feeds and feeding.

yes, waaay too big.

You can say that things that need to make leaves for you to harvest need nitrogen, like lettuce and spinach. but even thats a generalisation. You need to look up each plant, and what each fertiliser offers, and make a cross reference table. To be accurate:

Nitrogen promotes rapid growth, increases leaf size and quality, hastens crop maturity, and promotes fruit and seed development.

Phosphorous enhances seed germination and early growth, stimulates blooming, enhances bud set, aids in seed formation, hastens maturity, and provides winter hardiness to crops planted in late fall and early spring.

Potassium has many functions in plant growth. It
1) is essential for photosynthesis,
2) activates enzymes to metabolize carbohydrates for the manufacture of amino acids and proteins,
3) facilitates cell division and growth by helping to move starches and sugars between plant parts,
4) adds stalk and stem stiffness,
5) increases disease resistance,
6) increases drought tolerance,
7) regulates opening and closing of stomates,
8) gives plumpness to grain and seed,
9) improves firmness, texture, size and color of fruit crops, and
10) increases the oil content of oil crops

And then theres all sorts of trace elements that do obscure things.....

So you have to look at a plant and consider what it needs more of......

It  a much easier question to answer plant by plant.

i wouldnt be feeding the brassica's to much yet or they may just bolt .if you have put them in manured ground then leave them till later in the year you can give the peas ands such some liquid manure ,same with the courgettes as with the others .sweetcorn will come good with a liquid manure feed around the stems as well . remember to grease the stems about 6 inch from the lowest leaves or from the ground .... stop earwigs   but the snips just a general purpose fertiliser for now.and ur fine with the rest  :)
still alive /............
