Coughing Chooks
« on: July 08, 2008, 17:43 »
Holly has been making some funny noises for a couple of weeks now, noticed today that Mimi seems to be making the same noise too!!!  It  sounds like a cough, they don't have any other symptoms & Holly is still laying, (Mimi too young), any ideas on how to treat? or could it be something else?

hi mumsy -I am wondering if it could be one of two things, enviromental, are you using straw?any dust in the henhouse? any damp perhaps?

Secondly the first hen could have passed on an upper respiratory infection -could be minor if just a few coughs- or any of these symtoms would indicate them both requring antibiotics - any swelling around the face, particulary around the eyes. Look at the beak - is is slightly open sort of panting slightly? Look carefully for discharge around nostrils, eyes and beak. Listen to breathing is it wheezy at all. The hen may also feel warm which also would suggest an infection of some sort.

Hi Foxy
Thanks for your reply, I had been checking their breathing & nostrils all seems to be ok, I bought dust free straw, but have noticed it is still dusty   I think I will go back to buying a bale.   Their eyes look fine too & they are not panting, perhaps it could be the dust from the dust free straw,  they have started perching in the last month (only took them a year!! ) could be the dust from the dust free wood shavings on the floor

Think I will need some Babe, thank you, how are you? are you able to drive?
Apart from taking Jasper to the vet for a lump removal (Lou's dog) I am home, will have to wait in for vet to call when he's ready to be  collected.
