i was speaking to a friend last night and they said not to line the roof with roofing felt because of red mite living underneath it  :shock:  but now we are wondering if its ok to line the sides with waterproof mdf? my hubby is making the hen house now, with ship lap and then its to be lined do you think that is a good idea or not?  :?

Hi bockhamptoners.

If you are using shiplap and there are no gaps/knotholes then there should be no need to line it. As long as you treat the timber externally to stop rot, it'll be fine.

you can use felt on the roof providing you run a line of bitumen (felt adhesive) round the edge first to seal it before nailing it on.
That way, nothing can crawl underneath it.

An alternative is to use corrugated plastic or onduline type roofing over ply or osb.

thanks    we were lining it to make it easier to clean, no 'nooks and crannys' but if we seal around the edges, as you suggested with the roof felt, hopefully that will be ok  :idea:

I agree that lining would make it easier for cleaning.

My diy effort is t&g and I don't bother cleaning round all the nooks. So far so good but I might follow a similar route if the worst happens.  :?
