My runners don't want to run
« on: June 18, 2008, 11:23 »
Just want to know if there is anything I can do with my runner beans. I had low germination when I was waiting to get my plot, and a lot rotted off. Planted out the survivors at 2-4 leaf stage several weeks ago and they have done very little; they are still only 6-10 inches high and have gone very yellow. They have made no attempt to climb (I checked I had not bought dwarf seeds by mistake) and there are only a few inches of stem between the leaf pairs. The soil is very clay rich, although I put a lot of compost in, so could it be down to poor soil, or is there something else?

Ok, I'll give that a try. They are already heavily fed with growmore, but maybe that is too slow acting.

I don't have comfrey or nettle tea available - what sort of liquid food would you suggest, Aunt Sally?

Are we talking tomato food or a more balanced product?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I'd use liquid growmore then liquid tomato fertiliser when they start to flower.

Thanks for that, Aunty.

Didn't realise you could get growmore in a liquid format.

Look alikes are often cheaper.

For growmore substitute NPK = 7:7:7  give good leaf growth

For tomato fertiliser substitute NPK = 4:4.5:8 gives more flowers

professional growers tend to use ratios of:

1:1:1 (which is the same as 7:7:7)

1:1:3

3:1:3

and 3:1:6

although ive seen some bizarre ratios on export stuff, like 11:22:48

What do they use them for LP  :?:

Nitrogen: gives good leaf growth

Phosphorous: gives good root growth and promotes flowering

Potassium: makes plants strong and helps resistance to disease and changing weather (heat/cold).

So different mixes for different types of plants is good.

You don't want lush leaf growth on fruiting plants like tomatoes, peas and beans but you want lots of flowers.  You do want good leaf growth on brassicas but you need that leaf growth to be strong rather than lush for  wind and heat resistance and cold winter weather. But fast growing soft lush spring greens are lovely !

I will do the same to mine then since they are exactly as you described yours (small, yellow etc). I put em out a couple of weeks ago and I don't think they have gotten any bigger since.
