Carrot question
« on: June 08, 2008, 01:01 »
I've got tons of carrot seed left with nowhere to plant them this year, or at least not many now.  I've been told you can't keep carrot seed from one year til the next, but not sure if this is just marketing to get you to buy more, does anyone have experience of keeping seed a year or so?

They say the same re parsnip seeds masha, but I've tried some waaay out of date ones this year and they came up. Also 5 years out of date leeks have come up, and 4 years out of date Little Gem lettuces are thriving, plus stocks & other flowers
Saying that, some different variety leek seeds just 2 years out of date *haven't* germinated.
(I like experimenting, in case you wondered!)
If you've tons left, I'd say you've nothing to lose by at least storing them properly and giving them a go next year - maybe germinate a few in pots first to see?

Dr. Hessayon gives the viabilty as 4 years, so they should be fine, stored properly as iwaa says!

I use an old sweet tin, kept the the cool pantry.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Ooh how I'd love a pantry!  I'll give it a try in a tin, got the seeds from the seed savers catalogue so didn't think they'd try and b/s me!
