Asparagus
« on: June 01, 2008, 08:43 »
I planted 10 one year old crowns in April, all have come up and are close to flowering. Do I need to cut the down before they flower or do I leave them to do their thing.
Any advice would be much appreciated. 8)

I think you just leve them this eyar and let them do their own thing til the autumn, but this is my first asparagus year too so am no expert!  I only have 11 out of 20 up, bit disappointed really but still, its better than none at all!

Just let them get on with it for this year and maybe next too.
You should keep well weeded and make sure they have some support.(If they move about in the wind it can damage root system)

At present main thing is patience but you get a 20 year supply of asparagus once they are ready so can't be bad

Cheers HH :)
Keep digging

water them ... check for slugs .dig one up and look for eelworm ... feed the rest with potash  if none of the other things are present ,,, poison the slugs . forget growing potato's if eelworm is there . haeavy lime end of the season to help beat them

Some varieties are just more susceptible to bugs/diseases than others.
