2 year old chicken manure - advice wanted please
« on: May 30, 2008, 20:33 »
Hi,

A local farmer asked me to take away a big heap of two year old battery hen chicken manure.  It only has the odd tuft of grass growing on it and once you go under the top skin it still has a good smell from it.  The farmer is a friend and is not telling lies about its age.

Is this too fresh still to use?

What veg is best suited to this manure?

All advice welcome.
Thanks in advance.

J

Battery hen manure does not sound good if you are organic in any ways, otherwise grab it and use all around that needs it.

As for the health and safety bit, I'm not sure exactly if it's 3 or 5 years by regulations, but will depend greatly what drugs were used in rearing the animals, till usability of such manure on edible crops.

I use chicken manure that's 2 yrs or older. Chicken poo is much higher in nitrogen so you'll not want it on root crops like parsley and carrots. It's also more intense so spread it out a bit thinner than cow or horse manure on everything else.

just grab it now and then when ya bring it to ur garden it will have been turned over ,just use it sparingly and then let the rest rot down .if ya can get some horse muck make a layer bed of it .....horse muck chicken muck horse muck etc .lay the horse muck straw and all in a layer about 18 inch then add a 4ich layer of chicken poop build as high as your able  it will sink down as it rots .water it if it gets dry
