I have potted up a couple of the samples I dug out yesterday.
Hopefully they'll flower in the next couple of weeks.

the nearest I can find for foliage is Ajuga Reptans (bugle) but even that doesn't match exactly.

Maybe it arrived by comet.

Well, whatever it is - loads of it has appeared on our plot too while we've been on holiday for a week. It wasn't there before then

It's horrible - impossible to get out without snapping off some of the long white root. I'm guessing it'll just grow back from any bits of root left behind too

As long as you sage folk are sure it's not the dreaded thing beginning with the letter 'K' - it looked a bit like the picture of that in the weed section of an Alan Titchmarsh book I consulted.

Deffo (k)not that !

Check the leaves are opposite rather than alternate and you're ok.  :D

It reminds me of some Houttuynia Cordata my Dad planted in his previous garden. It spread like a disease !

But I'm sure it wouldn't be that.

That red tinged edge to the leaf certainly looks like it. I'm going to take a pic of some tonight so I can study it closely back at home and compare it to yours. I read on Wikipedia that it's also called "fishy-smell herb" or "fish mint" - urrrgggh!!! I'll give it a sniff and let you know

Maybe a better  photo, the second take doesn't resemble the first one, I mean. :?

I'll see what I can do. It was getting a bit dark (not much better now!) but I tried to lighten the photo.

I'll try for some details.

Righto. This one's a bit droopy cos it's been bashed about a bit but you can get the basic leaf shape and colouration.

If you crush a leaf does it have an unpleasant smell - quiote astringent.

I'm going with claradendron now
