Nope. Tried it in case it was a herb. No smell that I could detect.

Sorry.

The leaves and stem have a slight waxy appearance, not like the ones in that photo.

Sorry Aunty  :(

Ain't buggle or something similar? Has it got round or squarish stalk?

Round stalk. Red/green colouring. I did see a picture of bugle and wondered but it doesn't quite fit.

There are branching stalks growing from the leaf axils. I think it would become either a fairly wide bushy plant or sends out lots of long stalks to root elsewhere.

The roots are the white bootlace rhizomes similar to couch grass and all those other perennial pests.

How about this?

Enchanter's Nightshade
Scientific Name:Circaea lutetiana )
Other name: Broadleaf Enchanter's Nightshade
Family: Onagraceae

This ia a perennial and a member of the Onagraceae Family found throughout the British Isles. It prefers shaded, damp areas and spreads by means of white, cylindrical rhizomes. In classical mythology Circe the witch is said to have used this plant to turn the shipmates of Ulysses into pigs - hence the scientific or botanical name. It is a food plant for the Elephant Hawk-moth
The oval leaves narrow to a point and are rounded or slightly notched at the base, with a hairy stalk. They are arranged in opposite pairs on upright, hairy stems which are from 20 to 70 cm high depending on local conditions.
The white flowers are held on a long spike above the leaves and appear from June to August. They are pollinated by flies and the small, round, hairy fruits develop later.

It is not usually a problem weed, and is quite pretty in a woodland garden. It is easily uprooted, but any remaining underground stems will produce new topgrowth.
Weedkillers to use:-
Glyphosate is systemic so is taken down to the roots.
Nobody said this was going to be easy ... but some days are better than others!

Hmmmm. Possible. I think the flower is gong to be the key.

As soon as any come out, I'll post a photo. The trouble with weeds is, they tend to vary so much within the same species and a lot of different species look similar.

Thanks for that Peggy. ANother one for the 'could be' list.

2 good websites for identifying weeds and other plants....

http://www.dgsgardening.btinternet.co.uk/index.htm
http://www.botanicalkeys.co.uk/flora/index.html

Helps if you have a flower to narrow it down.

I quite like the idea of having an Enchanter's Nightshade in the garden ... sounds sort of exotic and mysterious (just like you, Rob   ).

Useful for turning unwanted visitors into pigs as well; all adds to the urban smallholding

My mirrors are fully functioning. It is an interesting topic and probably not one that can be fully covered on this thread.
A couple of courses I've been on have included the JOHARI window which is the way in which we keep some things to ourselves, make other things public and 'leak' certain things unintentionally. Not a very good explanation. I've done exercises which show up certain traits, good and bad, which I didn't even notice.

Worth a read up if you like that sort of thing. Not surprisingly, I do !  :)

Sounds like we should go 'off topic' and compare notes on psychometric measures, Rob!

sounds scary to me !!

Don't want the men in black carting me off. And what about the voices ?

And the people who live in the wardrobe ?

Nobody understands. Except the flowers I talk to. They tell me things.
