What to do with a clumsy Cochin???
« on: May 15, 2008, 15:27 »
Well fraggle has been sitting on her eggs and is due to hatch what is left on tuesday. She has so far managed to break 3 of the 6 she originally had. When the remaining eggs hatch i have a problem. I guess she will remain clumsy and ? stand on the chicks? Also her nest is 6ft up on the wall. She has so far resisted all attempts to relocate her and has refused to sit in protest in the past. What am i going to do when the patter of tiny feet arrives???

I hope someone has a solution as i really dont knoe what to do with her.

Thanks

I put mine in a puppy cage or something similar and it always works even if the chook is unsettled to start with

In standard books that say how to keep hens and chicks it advises that when the chicks are born you put a gate between mum and chicks so that if the chicks feel unsafe, they can get through the gate and into a small area where mum can't -because she can't fit through the gate. This means the chicks return to mummy when they feel cold or unsettled, and mummy becomes less clumsy.
At the same time, I wouldn't think she would be able to kill them by standing on them, as the chicks would probably move or struggle if she were to try.
