I have a shear that is rather poor at cutting grass round the edge of the garden grass.  I have had it for up to 10 years and wonder before I go and buy a new one does anyone out there know how to sharpen them properly as apart from its performance it is in good condition.
I have just tried using an oil stone on it and has made no real improvement

It can be done with an electric angle grinder, but there is a "bit of a knack to it"
getiing them sharpened in a shop will cost about £14, and I expect a good pair will set you back much more than that new.

First post, hello all....

Funnily enough I sharpened a pair of shears yesterday, followed by the hoe, and shortly the pruners and clippers....  I used a B&Q own brand version of the "Dremmel" (Rotary power tool, apparently....) - Should be able to pick one up for the price of getting them done by someone else, then you can do all your own sharpening.  For best result, use in combination with a vice, or failing that at least a workbench type table.

I spoke to a work colleague today and using a vice to hold the blade and my mini angle grinder and a file I ground the edges and the bits that jut out beside the handles so that the tip crosses and it all works really well.  Angled at about 45deg - it really only took about 2 minutes of very light grinding
