Just aquired a tub that is deep enough for potatoes. I read some of the previous posts and some people have had them 'chitting' since january. Am I do late and if not can I buy them ready to plant or do I have to 'chit them' myself

Hi there - I was thinking the same thing, so last weekend went down to my local garden centre to see if they still had any seed potatoes - no first earlies there, but still had second earlies and main crops, and joy of joys - they had chitted themselves nicely in the bag, so thought it was worth risking for £1.69. I just put mine in a few tubs and in the bottom of a grow bag (with the top compost taken off, and I will top them up as they grow. Don't know if I will have any success, but thats half the fun I think!. I read on here somewhere that they take 10 weeks to mature from planting. (I love this site!!!). Hope this is useful - I am definately not an expert!

OOPS - sorry - just read the very useful info you get to from the home page of this site about growing spuds and second earlies are 13 week to harvest from planting, main crop are 20 weeks it says, so must put note on my calender for 13 weeks time to have a look at my spuds.
