I've bought asparagus, rhubarb and strawberries this years at Woolies... and wasted a good 20 pounds!!

Half of the strawberries died/ were dead, asparagus and rhubarb must have died, too. After maybe 2 months being in the ground I couldn't resist to have a peep, if nothing was starting to grow: but nada/ nothing/ zilch!! I had marked each position but each asparagus and rhubarb crown had died and decomposed. And I don't have mice/ rats/ rabbits or cheeky crows (they'll just go for the apples).

And the worst of it: I've dumped the receipts a long time ago

well thats not good then, oh well, just have to hope the best.

Mine all look live ish, and for 30p a plant I'm not expecting miracles.

5 of my 7 expensive ones are all well and truly springing into life now.

Just been to my local woolies, and grabbed some raspberrys £2 reduced, the varieties vary at each branch , got some glen clova today, and will get some glen ample from the other bigger branch.

Having bought root stock from one of the most reputable suppliers and none ever grew, the replacement they sent me in November were no better, only 1 out of 12 is growing.

That sounds bad, did you plant them up as they arrived? If so name and shame and complain. Get your money back, but leave them alone, they will probably grow next year , anyway.  8)

I think you've got to be very selective with the packs you pick from Woolies. All of the stuff I've bought has survived, but I looked at every packet in minute detail to make sure the plants looked viable. We've only lost one rhubarb crown out of 25 strawberries, 12 raspberry canes, 2 blueberry bushes, a redcurrant, a cranberry and 3 rhubarbs. Everything was planted out straight away in individual pots.

May 2007, Ordered Gooseberry Invicta, and 10 Glen Ample Rasp cane, followed instructions to the letter, put them straight in a bucket of water as they instructed, the first lot bought I think must have been the last lonely bunch left on the shelf , as this was end of May 2007 and most places I looked locally had sold out. Also forgot, the gooseberry bush also from them died, its replacement was okay though.

I know all these nurseries try their hardest to replace, and to their credit they have, on both items, is this a typical experience of buying root stock by mail order ?

Got some Rhunbard and a cranberry bush as well, two of the four rhubarbs are in dire condition, stalks are busy decomposing.

Lopped them off and just planted the root somewhere secluded.

I went back in to the main town after work, to the larger branch in Kingston, and bought 3 lots of Glen Ample, so 12 canes. They were planted in the ground by the evening. Will keep an eye out for other different varieties when I pass another store.

I kept them out of the light till I was ready to plant soaked them for a couple of hours and planted them with some bonemeal. Hoping to take some cuttings at the end of the year if that is posible anyone know how.

The usual way is to dig up suckers. I think that will take a bit longer though.
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

I got some strawberries, 4 rasp canes.
I dont have the space yet to put them in, but wonder if I should start the stawberries in little pots to get the going right away then put them into the bed when it is ready?
This is my 1st year, so I have had a lot of digging to do!
