rhubarb vs tortoise?

Hi, A lovely friend of mine has offered me a rhubarb plant as her allotment patch is plentiful with the stuff. I've never grown this before and know little about it other than it tastes good!!

Can I grow it in a really large pot? Or would it do better in the ground? Reason I ask is that I know the leaves are poisonous and I have a tortoise that lives in my garden. While I have little fences to (try to) stop him getting to most of my plants he does occasionally just barge his way through and so wanted to avoid him being able to eat the rhubarb leaves (he's a right little muncher!!) :roll:

Sorry but I think you'd be better to play safe and keep him off the rhubarb, a few bamboo canes and a little netting wire would be more than adequate.

I always fancied a tortoise since I was a child but thought they were protected and not available, things change I suppose?

You can buy them with a licence nowadays, but our hefty little * has been in the family for years, passed down a generation to us, and we don't know how old he is!

He once woke me and my partner up to a lovely grating sound coming from the garden. When we looked out the window we saw the garden table moving across the patio :!: When I went down to take a look, he'd got inside the leg frame and got his shell stuck, but that wasn't gonna stop him getting to where he wanted to go!!

i have the phobia from hell when it comes to your shell like friend!!
stupid i know, something from when i was a child i suppose - it is abit embarrising when i try to explain to people about my fear!!
but i cant breath and near on pass out on seeing one!!!!!!!! lol eeek
