Advice needed on mixing breeds
« on: April 10, 2008, 18:29 »
Hi everyone,

I am currently in the process of sorting out getting 4 chucks to live in our garden.

I have had chucks before but my parents pen was HUGE (complete bottom section of their garden) compared to how big mine will be so i have never had to think about what sort i would really like to have!!

As i cant really make up my mind as to what breeds to get i was just wondering what you all thought about mixing the breeds?  Would i be ok to have 4 different breeds or would i be better in having 2 + 2 or one single breed?

Any advice would be welcome  :)

Thanks

Would like to rehome ex batt again, a brahma, a lavender bantam orpington and a favervolle!!!

That is the list so far  :)

I like silkies and polands ( ) but have ruled them out for my flock...am working rather hard to get my dad to have some!

Its not the breeds that really matter. Putting new chickens together is always a bit fraught. For instance, if you were to put  four Rhode Island Reds from different sources together, you'd have as much difficulty as if you'd had four different breeds from four places.

Thanks for your replies.

We have had numerous breeds together over the years and i have to say (touch wood) we have never had any problems, but whether that had anything to do with the pen being big or the fact we were lucky im not sure.

Would your advice be not to try it Bodger?  Or would you recommend i got them all from the same breeder?  As i know a man who has them all...well apart from the ex batt!

You are Poland mad babe!!!

Lovely pics again Babe.
As for mixing breeds I have cochins, wyandottes, marans (I think), Pekins and some like the one on the front of the forum post thingy. They have all mixed and matched really well. I always introduce at night time and if you get four different ones who don't know each other going into a new pen with no others I would think they would be ok. I have done it but I suppose its not guaranteed. And as for the babies    Great fun
Oh and I have POLANDS and SILKIES and Sultany types in one pen, introduced at different times but no problem
Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most!!

You're only going to have a few , so I'd say have a mixture and see how you go. Similar size and age might be a good idea though.

have you had a good look through the photo section in the hen house... you will see lots of wonderful girls (and boys) to help you choose.

but it really doesnt matter what you have, they are such fun to watch you will fall in love with them. they have their own little pesonalities and are the cheekiest, nosiest little creatures.

they never fail to make me laugh.
