please help my potatoes!
« on: April 09, 2008, 16:01 »
Hi all

Being very new and eager i planted my potatoes roughly 4 weeks ago outside in tubs and they have been growing very nicely with nice 3 - 4 inch green leaves poking out of the soil.

But since we had the snow in the middle of the night and no chance of covering them they got covered in snow, the leaves have turned very dark green/black does this mean my potatoes have had it and i should start again   or will they perk up and new shoots come.

Any help and advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Those shoots have had it, it will set the plant back & you may not get the crop that you would have. It's quite likely some more shoots will appear so don't chuck them out yet.

Valuable lesson to all about not starting things too early!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Cut out frost burnt foliage, they'll be fine and try to fleece them when frost is forecast, keeping an eye on the weather is part of gardening. An important one.
