Tesco Trees
« on: March 27, 2008, 15:09 »
I was in Tesco today and saw some trees, apple, pear, cherry and plum.

Has anyone seen/bought any of these?

I'm aware that at least some of these have weird pollination habits, dont you need three different apple trees?

Just wondering if anyone wiser than myself thought any of them were worth a closer look, self pollinating apples maybe?
We use chemicals in this garden, just as god intended

In my case we don't have an Aldi and never heard of Poundland.  We do have a Lidl but don't seem to get the offers you get.  Tesco have just opened their new superstore here after a fight and it's far too big for the Island.

i think in this economical climate you have to get the bargain where they fall , we bought three trees from makro , they were just sticks they cost 4 euros each , Ive had 2 years of nectarines and this year at last we will have pears and apples fingers crossed .

Another echo    What makes this country great is the freedom to go where u want too, I fear that will change once Tesco's, Asda have killed off all the little ppl and closed all the towns, I dont fear Wilko's or poundland, they are hardley making any inpact on local traders.Just my point of view.

Certainly not against bargains but I am against the politcs and methods of supermarkets, for that tree to be a bargain means some poor soul who has done the work will get pitence for it. I have copied from another thread what really gets my back up about supermarkets and proves what short memories some ppl have..... Quote our dear friend Muntjac "went to have pick of some tonite .am absolutly gobsmacked at what i found .i called matey and told him i was coming over and he said whats left is yours ... all i can say is wait till i put the pics up. what a blooming disaster the massive food superchains      have imposed on the farmers when they wont sell unmarked spuds .....there is nothing wrong with 99% of the spuds in the field but some have what can be described as cuts in the flesh that have healed up and may look ugly. i will post the pics as soon as my boy loads em up"
I dont want this to go off subject but it seems to have done and I am more than to continue elsewhere, but I do have very strong views on the way supermarkets conduct their buisness.

I disagree with the classification system, but its not exactly like Tesco are the only people who do that, I dont recall my local green grocer selling bent or forked carrots either.
Unfortunatly, most people seem to think carrots that arent straight to within 3 degrees and potatoes that arent perfectly formed are diseased, and Tesco give them what they want.

Undercutting "proper" suppliers is just a side effect.
For example, the ones I saw were just on pallets in what is normaly unused space.
The only cost to Tesco was buying them and shipping them to the store.
I asked on here if anyone knew whether they would fruit, becuas ethe Tesco staff wouldnt have a clue.

Had I gone to a garden centre, these tree's would have a set space, which costs, knowledgable staff, which costs, and much higher purchase costs.
Lets face it, Tesco probably went to grower and bought their entire stock, which companies do like.

Its not so much Tesco are evil, its just they do what people want, ie provide stuff cheaply.
What people dont so much, or at least are unwilling to pay for, are things like, staff who have a clue about the product, like you would find at a garden centre.
But then, you can also find that information for free on the Net.

Note, Just so all the cards are on the table
I do own shares in Tesco, so it could be said I have a financial stake in this.

Anyway, back on tree's
I may buy a few of the cherry trees just as tree's if they still have them tonight
