Thanks for the tip, mumof4. Are they bigger than florist's buckets?
(sorry if that's a daft Q, I haven't seen them   )

Get yourself off to ASDA. I work there and they only chuck em at the end of the day. There are different sizes and depths. I have some potatoes in mine and theyve come up a treat. They are free.
Oh for those halcyon days of England long ago

I was in ASDA yesterday Ruby Red, and saw a lady piling all the empty buckets onto a trolley. I looked & looked but didn't have the cheek to ask if I could buy em  :D  Maybe on Monday......

They are proper buckets like the orange B&Q ones 14" accross and 12 deep. I was lucky they only charged me for three and i had five so i'm well chuffed. Never tried growing like this before but have heard it works.

They just put them in the crusher outside. Such a waste. Just say something like "Im told that you crush these buckets. As a store who holds green values dear to your heart, could I take some off your hands and recycle them please."Ive got a dozen in 2 different sizes. Herbs and potatoes in mine.

I just put one tater in each bucket, but if you don't mind smaller taters you can put two.
Going to ask on Monday Ruby Red, definitely  :D  I've bought 50 over the past few months, but need more cos I'm running out and the florist is fed up of me

Do your carrots and parsnips grow well in buckets and how many do you normally plant per bucket?  I was thinking of planting them in containers as my soil is heavy clay on my allotment and I haven't had chance to properly double dig it yet.  Thought that this could be a good alternative and perhaps would deter those dread carrot flies too.

I'm not an expert Teen, am only learning myself    But yep, my carrots & parsnips did really well in buckets. How many you sow depends on how big you want them. I only like baby carrots so sowed lots, but only 6 parsnips per bucket. You can always 'thin out' anyway if you do sow too many

Our local Somerfields now prefer to send them to landfill rather than give them away, so the security man told me, I was taking some as I always had done, but he said I'm not allowed any more!

  What a waste, and how environmentally unfriendly! I can't understand the logic in that?

I know, I even offered to buy them but he said they're not for sale and he's not allowed to give them away, ridiculous.  Mind you I don't really understand why they can't re-use them?
