Hi,
we are on day three of owning chooks, we have two 6 week old Auracunas and one year old hen (not sure of breed), they have been with us since Saturday, when can we expect the big one to start laying? We have a large ish house which is off the ground with two compartments, we have put a 'roost' affair in one side made of branches that they can get their feet around and the other side had plenty of bedding. They all go into the bedding area at dusk and the large hen (Gloria) sort of sits on the two little ones (Dora and Boots). I am not sure where Gloria would lay if she was going to... Under the hen house is a sheltered area, i was wondering if I should perhaps make a nest box type thing and put it under there.. what do you think?
Thanks,

sounds like shes mothering the 2 little ones - might put her off laying if she's already playing mum???

But I know nothing i'm sure someone else will have a sensible answer......
1 x hubby
2 x daughters
3 x chickens
1 x bunny
6 x african snails  . . . . . and counting.

she'll lay when she's ready. moving can be a bit stressfull and stop them. she may still be getting over the moult.

dont worry, it will happen, and it will be absolutely wonderful when you find that first egg and the 2nd.............so on and so on.

what are you feeding, and do you have grit and oyster shell?

I wouldn't get too concerned - our first chickens took 6 weeks to lay an egg and we'd bought them at "point of lay"

When the girls are ready they'll lay

thanks to you all for your replies, will let you know when the first one arrives.  My ignorance even extends to what time of day a hen might lay an egg!!!

They usually lay in the morning but...sometimes they hang on till teatime!  :) Just enjoy them...they'll lay when they're settled! You could try grapes as well as the usual stuff...! They might not lay but they'll love you!!
